Deadtree Design is the business name for the studios of architectural designer Larry Larson, located in Haines, Alaska and in (the winter months) Flagstaff, Arizona. Founded in 1980, Deadtree Design (DTD) is all about design, building and
research dedicated to artfully integrating people with
their surroundings.
Larry came to Haines in 1975 after a year of travel and study abroad, an extensive two year drafting/design program, two years of college and another two years of on-the-job carpentry training in Mammoth Lakes, CA and Park City, UT. After this came several years of work as a journeyman carpenter, leading to a design-build contracting start-up in Haines.
It was during that period in the eighties that the desire to design full time came to the fore. The last house to be both designed and built by DTD was in 1990. It was also the year that the Haines studio was built. 1995 saw the transition to computer aided design (CAD) from hand drafting. Though pencil work was an art in itself, there was no going back.
In the years that followed, DTD has worked and studied under architects and collaborated with engineers in designing and documenting commercial and institutional buildings in Haines, Skagway and Juneau. Residential projects number in the hundreds and span the continent. Local service to the Flagstaff area was added in 2001.
